5 Scary Spiders
Arachnophobes say the legginess and sudden movement of spiders is what scares them the most. Their creepy-crawly looks may freak people out because our human brains can’t reasonably predict scary spiders’ quick erratic movements. Unfortunately, some of the most frightening spiders live right here in New Jersey.

The Scariest Spiders New Jersey
Wolf Spider
Though mainly harmless to humans, wolf spiders are feared because of their fierce namesake and size. As one of the largest spiders in the area, the wolf spider can reach two inches in length. They have very long, hairy legs and sharp fangs that add to their intimidation factor. Although the wolf spider isn’t aggressive, it will undoubtedly send people running in the other direction.
These hairy arachnids have fuzzy black, gray, and brown hues. Quick to move, these scary spiders often provoke fear when found indoors. But, don’t worry. Wolf spiders would rather run and hide from you than bite.
Black Widow
There are two different black widow spiders in New Jersey, the southern L. machines and the northern black L. various. Both have similar appearances but differ in the shape of their hourglass marking. Both are shiny and black with the classic red hourglass shape on its abdomen. However the northern type’s hourglass is often broken, and they are known to have white spots on their backs.
These scary spiders tend to hide in quiet out-of-site spaces, like dark corners, closets, sheds, and basements.
From Black Widow the movie to Iggy Azalea’s Black Widow music video, these horrific creatures catch a bad rap (and with good reason).
If you come face-to-face with a black widow (and it’s not Natasha Romanoff), promise us you’ll back away very slowly and give us a call immediately. They’re dangerous! The venom of these scary spiders contains a potent neurotoxin, which can cause their victim extreme nerve pain.

Yellow Spider
These tiny yet powerful yellow spiders pack a powerful punch when taking a nibble out of their victim. Though they are not poisonous, the yellow sac spider is venomous. Not only is a yellow sac spider’s bite excruciating, but it also causes intense swelling and itching of the skin.
Their venom is unlikely to cause any lasting damage. However, it’s still a good idea to reach out to your doctor if one of these scary spiders bites you.
Unfortunately, these spiders do not love cold weather which is why they invite themselves inside your house during the winter months. They enjoy crawling on ceilings and walls, and don’t be surprised if they make their way into your favorite cozy sweater.
Brown Recluse
With a violin-shaped mark on their abdomen, the brown recluse is definitely one of the scary spiders to fear. These venomous spiders grow to about the size of a quarter.
As treacherous as they look, some horrifying symptoms of a brown recluse spider bite include bloody urine, extreme fatigue, and excruciating joint pain. In addition, they can inject venom that causes pain and itching at the bite site. The tissue around the bite can ulcerate and die, or if able to be saved, it can take upwards of a year to heal. So if you think you’ve been bitten by a brown recluse, seek immediate attention from your health care provider.
The good news is when it comes to these brown eight-legged freaks, they are not aggressive and generally only feel inclined to bite when feeling threatened.
Jumping Spiders
Jumping spiders can leap great distances in a single bound. Upon spotting dinner, these scary spiders will quickly leap into action. In fact, they can skip anywhere from 6 to 50 times their body length! They’re so good at catching prey; they don’t even need to spin a web.
As genuinely curious creatures, jumping spiders are considered (by the spider-loving community) to be friendly. When approached by a human, they’re known to make eye contact and slowly back away. Ok, John Wick.
What if you come in contact with a venomous spider?
Most spider bites are harmless, even nibbles from some of the scariest spiders around. However, if you are bitten by a dangerous spider, like the brown recluse or black widow, seek medical attention immediately.
