Franklin Lakes: All About the Benjamins
Franklin Lakes is a picturesque New Jersey borough brimming with beauty, expansive properties, and an affluent suburban atmosphere. Distinct for its rolling terrain, pockets of woodlands, and pristine lakes, it offers an outskirts-of-town feel, flirting with ruralness without being far from big-city life. Summers are full of outdoor activities, from boating to hiking, while the cool weather welcomes a retreat-like essence, with a satisfying sense of serenity falling across snow-capped fields and frozen foliage.
Historically, this town was dominated by farmland before shifting toward residential life. Officially incorporated in 1922, the city likely takes its name from Benjamin Franklin and the many local bodies of water (there are roughly 10-15 lakes and ponds nearby). Over time, it evolved into one of Bergen County’s richest areas, offering highly rated schools, family-centered attractions, and easy access to New York City (making it especially attractive to professionals who prefer to work far from the office).
Not-So-Nice Mice and Sucky Mosquitos
Franklin Lakes might be a mecca of the elite, but pests don’t need exceptional credit to live here; they settle in for free.
Mice and rats are common pests, with mice more likely to invade homes and rats often found inside commercial buildings, sewers, and dumpsters. They’re both excellent climbers and prolific breeders, allowing a pair of mates to quickly evolve into a full infestation. One of the largest infestations on record was the Australia Mice Plague, which involved hundreds of millions to over a billion mice and thousands of square miles of rural, down-under farmland. Mice invaded everything in their path, including cars, machinery, and ovens, destroyed crops, and did millions of dollars in agricultural damage.
Grasshoppers are also known for doing damage in large numbers. They don’t typically infest homes, but may invade gardens and crops in swarms when experiencing hormonal changes and environmental triggers. They can jump more than 20 times their body length, and their ears are in their abdomens. Fun fact: Not only are grasshoppers insects, but they’re also a chocolate-mint-flavored cookie, a cocktail, a type of pie, and a nickname for beginners just starting a craft.
Mosquitoes are drawn to carbon dioxide and able to detect it from more than 100 feet away. They are most active at dusk, when the air is calmer and more humid, making it easier for them to fly, find mates, and stay hydrated. They’re most problematic in areas with standing water (such as Franklin Lakes), as they use moisture to lay eggs. Even so, they don’t require a vacation home near Crystal Lake for reproduction; even a birdbath or a clogged gutter is enough to lure them. You can tell whether a mosquito is female or male based on its feeding tendencies. Only females bite . . . they require blood to develop their eggs. Males are less likely to be fans of vampire movies; they feed on nectar and plant sugars.
