Bloomfield is a terrific place for pests to frolic, and many find their way indoors. Some enter intentionally, in search of prey or shelter, while others take wrong turns on their way to their nests and get lost in your kitchen nook. 

Rats are an intelligent, adaptable species, making them difficult to remove from homes and buildings. They have strong memories and can mentally map and recall routes to food, shelter, or safety. Some rats, like the Norway Rat, are exceptional swimmers and graceful divers. Rats are also notoriously fearful of new things, a survival instinct that keeps them out of traps. 

Houseflies are pesky nuisances that increase in number as the weather warms. Attracted to garbage, decaying organic matter, discarded food, and animal waste, they’re notorious for hovering around trash cans and laying eggs inside Rubbermaids. Despite their tendency to get down and dirty, houseflies are surprisingly obsessive groomers; this keeps their senses sharp and helps them look “fly” when going out on dates.

Hornets are a type of large wasp, with some species especially protective of their nests. If you approach their nests too often, a hornet might remember you and act more aggressively the next time you’re in sight (or, at the very least, write about you in their blog: Pesty People: How to Human-Proof a Hornet Home). Some hornets stand guard outside their nests; their sole job is to inspect anyone or anything approaching and decide whether or not they’re a threat. 

Orb-weaver spiders are prominent in Bloomfield and throughout the East Coast. They rely heavily on vibration, shaking their webs violently when predators approach (in an attempt to disguise themselves) and using vibrations to decipher pollen, leaves, and live prey. Some species are potently pragmatic, going so far as to remove certain parts of their webs when storms approach to protect their homes from damage. 

Carpenter ants are known for their wood-excavating tendies. Unlike termites (that feast on wood), these arthropods use everything from oak to ash to create nests and tunnel systems. While ants in general don’t like water, carpenter ants tolerate dampness; they’ve been found alive in pipes and sewers. They can float on water for a few hours and often join together to create little ant rafts. They probably can’t go venturing down the Mississippi River like Huckleberry Finn, but this gives them a chance to survive when somewhat submerged.
