Mahwah: Mother Nature’s Magnificence

Mahwah is a majestic town that looks as if it were ripped from a William Wordsworth poem. Set against the Ramapo Mountains, it’s naturally striking and uninhibited in its beauty and variety. Wooded escapes, reservoirs, preserved land, and gentle slopes define the area, and hiking, biking, photography, and wildlife viewing keep locals in touch with their roots. It’s a haven for outdoor lovers and those who cherish their front-row seat to Earth’s beauty.

Similar to other nearby towns, this borough has rural roots, but it eventually blossomed into an industrial and corporate center (it was once home to a major Ford plant). It evolved further in recent decades, emerging as a residential refuge known for its family-oriented activities, active lifestyles, slow-and-steady pace, and civic engagement. Residents spend their days hiking to waterfalls, visiting the museum, taking part in seasonal events (farmers’ markets and pumpkin patches), and enjoying happy hour at the local bar scene. While the city lacks marquee attractions or much of a nightlife, Manhattan is only an hour away.

The Pest of Times, The Worst of Times

Mahwah is muddled with all kinds of creepy crawlers, tricky intruders, and furry frenemies. While not all of these pests bite, several species are parasitic, defensive, or aggressive.

Female mosquitoes pierce the skin to feed on blood (as part of their reproductive process), typically causing an itchy, raised welt (an immune response to the mosquito’s saliva). They’re the most common human-biting pest and a vicious vector for disease transmission. Ticks are also bloodsuckers; they attach to their hosts and feed for hours or days (some ticks eat so much that they swell to several times their normal size). Although their bites are often painless, Lyme disease is common, particularly in New Jersey (where up to 30% of ticks are believed to be infected).

Fleas favor Fido over people, but biting humans isn’t unheard of. When they do bite, it’s usually near the ankles and causes small, red, and intensely itchy bumps. The rat flea is one of history’s most notorious biters; it was responsible for the Bubonic Plague, a pandemic so catastrophic that it reduced Europe’s population by between 30-60% (it killed people in Asia and North Africa, too). The rat flea can still transmit the plague in modern day (a not-so-fun fact for germaphobes), but it’s highly treatable thanks to Alexander Fleming’s 1928 discovery of penicillin. Bedbugs are biters as well, yet polite enough to (mostly) wait until you’re in dreamland before sinking in their teeth. Like others on this list, they feed on blood, leaving behind itchy red welts (or more serious reactions for those with allergies).

Fire ants, spiders, and wasps aren’t parasitic, yet can be aggressive or defensive, biting or stinging when they feel threatened. Fire ants are multitasking menaces that bite and sting at the same time (isn’t that fun?), making them among the most painful pest encounters. Some spider bites can be extremely painful, like the Black Widow’s, while others you might not even feel. Wasps don’t bite, but they do sting, doing so repeatedly until they’re either tired or satisfied that the threat is gone.
