Rodents, Roaches, and Long-Living Queens

Park Ridge, like other Garden State boroughs, is booming with pests, drawing insects, arachnids, and rodents from all walks (and crawls) of life. 

Rats like dark, dank, and cluttered spaces and value familiarity. They exhibit signs of neophobia, which means they’re afraid of new things and often evade traps because of their innate perception of strangeness. They can compress their bodies to fit into spaces the size of a quarter and use their urine to send chemical messages via pheromones, conveying information about routes, reproductive status, and boundaries. 

Mice “talk” to each other through ultrasonic vocalizations that are too high for human perception. Intelligent animals, they can memorize layouts and make tiny highways in your Park Ridge home. Their incisors never stop growing, which is why they chew on everything, including the cord to your flat-screen TV.

Cockroaches have simplified nervous systems, allowing them to survive the seemingly impossible (including life without a head). While insect myth claims they could survive a nuclear war, that’s unlikely; they did, however, survive the meteor that killed the dinosaurs, as did many small, underground, and underwater animals. 

Termites lived back in prehistoric times as well, feasting on fallen branches and decaying logs. A species with some of the longest-living queens in the insect world (with her royal highnesses living 40 years or longer), termite colonies are complex, social, and collective, resembling tiny cities inside your ceiling.
