Angry Stingers, Painful Biters, and Wood-Boring Bores

Wheel bugs are predatory insects and pest controllers in their own right, feeding on beetles, aphids, stink bugs, and caterpillars with their needle-like beaks. They make their homes inside trees, shrubs, gardens, and wooded areas, but occasionally wander into houses through cracks and open doors. They’re not aggressive, yet they’ll bite if handled, and you’ll feel it . . . they have one of the most painful bites in the animal kingdom.

Carolina mantises can rotate their heads like owls, turning them roughly 180 degrees. Like wheel bugs, they’re more likely to infest your yard than your house, though they do occasionally take a wrong turn and end up in your garage or living room. These insects blend in effortlessly with bark and dried vegetation and are mighty warriors; they can catch and kill prey much larger than themselves, even feeding on lizards. 

Carpenter bees also aren’t as important pollinators as bumblebees, and they’re far more destructive. Like carpenter ants, these larger than average bees excavate wood, using it to set up elaborate tunnels and storage systems. Geometrically gifted, they create near-perfect circles, returning to the same ones year after year (weakening your siding, deck, fence, or porch).

Mice and rats are uber-prominent rodents attracted to crumbs, clutter, trash, warmth, and pet food (including birdseed). Exceptional reproducers, a single rodent couple can quickly evolve into a multi-generational pest problem inside Passaic County homes. Mice and rats have several hidden talents: they can climb textured walls, fit through gaps the size of a coin, remember routes, and adapt their behavior to avoid danger.
