Where Pests Find Success

Bergenfield is a town where pests flourish. Drawn to the area’s nature, climate, and landscape, they enter homes and businesses freely and are difficult to deter.

Mice are one of the most common infestations across the state and beyond. They can climb up textured walls, run along wires, and jump a foot high. They can squeeze through tiny gaps (roughly the size of a dime) and have exceptional hearing, especially at high frequencies. Mice have incisors that never stop growing, which is why they’ve put your cables and cords at the top of their “to-chew” list. 

Rats are terrific climbers as well, able to scale pipes and rough walls vertically; their strong claws help them dig into textured surfaces. They communicate through ultrasonic squeaks that are too high for human perception, use their tails to balance and regulate temperature, and exhibit caution around new foods and objects, a phobia that helps them survive . . . and keeps them out of traps.

Ground bees are different from honeybees (your friendly neighborhood pollinator). They’re solitary and rarely sting. True to their name, they dig small burrows in the soil to make their nests, which show up as minute mounds in Bergenfield lawns. Hornets are also different from honeybees: They’re large wasps with social tendencies. Their nests can house hundreds of workers, typically thriving in August and September, and they can be aggressive toward people, but they’re deadly to flies, caterpillars, and other insects, acting as predators.
