Englewood: A Tucked-Away, Bucolic Borough
Englewood is located on the eastern edge of Bergen County, situated near New York City and the Hudson River. Parts of town rise to meet the Hudson Palisades, providing rustic beauty and a diverse landscape. Rolling terrains, historic homes, and grand glades of greenery make the area feel tucked away, a natural reprieve surrounded by suburbia.
Originally a streetcar city teeming with trolleys and designed to draw New Yorkers away from big-city life, it came into its own in the 20th century. Today, it’s a mix of middle-class residents and pockets of affluence. The lively downtown area vibes with trendy shops, eateries, and businesses, while a strong arts presence embraces creativity and whimsy. Many artists, musicians, and entertainers flock to the area; outdoor adventurers, pulled into open space and park culture, like it here, too. Celebrities aren’t unheard of, either; pre-Hollywood, Fort Lee (just a few miles away) was one of the first film capitals in the world.
Rascally Rodents and Flying Frenemies
Several pest species enjoy life in Englewood. They enter homes and offices through pipes, foundation cracks, torn screens, vents, and open doors. Many can wiggle through tiny gaps, gaining access that seems impossible.
Mice flock to the suburbs like soccer moms. They’re drawn to the warmth of homes, shelter from nasty elements, and easy food sources. Crumb-covered kitchen floors, open pantry items, and bags of dog food offer quick meals and leave mice coming back for more . . . and bringing their friends. Rats can enter homes, though they tend to prefer sewers, garages, crawl spaces, and familiar haunts. They’re more cautious than mice, and bigger, requiring gaps roughly the size of a quarter to squeeze through. You’re more likely to find a rat in your garbage than your pantry; they favor clutter, compost, and reliable water sources (e.g. drains or leaks).
Flies feel like fiends, but they’re actually our frenemies. Despite their dirty dealings and contaminating conduct, they are beneficial to nature. They lay eggs on decaying material, and their larvae (aka, maggots) break down everything from rotting food to roadkill. This bolsters decomposition, making it faster and returning nutrients to the soil.
Crickets prefer moisture-prone and dark spaces, especially nooks with high humidity. Only the males chirp, doing so to ward off threats, attract females, or communicate like a game of Telephone. They use different chirps for different messages. Ants come in a variety of species and are attracted to sugar, food residue (sticky spills), and grease. One type of ant, the Bullet Ant, isn’t native to New Jersey (or anywhere stateside) but is interesting nonetheless. It possesses what is widely regarded as the most painful insect sting in the animal kingdom, inflicting an intense, burning, and sometimes temporarily paralyzing, sting similar to being shot (hence the name). These ants are found in Costa Rica, Brazil, and the Amazon basin. The ants on Englewood properties are most likely to be odorous house ants, carpenter ants, pavement ants, or little black ants.
