Allendale is a popular place for pests due to its vegetation, welcoming weather, and residential properties (more people mean more food and shelter).  

Termites are a common infestation; their appetite for destruction makes them dangerous, damaging, and as that term suggests, probably, Guns N’ Roses fans. They never sleep, eat nonstop, and the queens can reign for decades. They feed on cellulose, a main component of wood, which is why these tiny wood workers find your attic appetizing and enjoy feasting on your front door. Hardworking overachievers, termites do billions of dollars in property damage every year across the globe. 

Wasps are beneficial when they stay in their lane, as they hunt some disease-causing insects (like flies). However, a nest above your Allendale swimming pool or near your back patio is another story. Wasps can act aggressively toward humans, especially if they perceive a threat or you’ve swatted at them before (these bugs hold a grudge!). Unlike bees, they can sting repeatedly, continuing until they tire. 

Spiders are solitary creatures that only socialize during mating. They come in all shapes and sizes and evoke various levels of fear. While an itsy-bitsy spider crawling up your waterspout might not disturb you, a wolf spider joining you for dinner probably will. Some spiders, like the Black Widow, inject toxins through their fangs. Their bites are rarely life-threatening, typically causing muscle cramping, sweating, nausea, body pains, and a rapid heart rate. Serious reactions are more common in the elderly, kids, and those with underlying medical conditions. 

Clover mites are tiny, red arachnids that favor sun-exposed walls. They leave a red stain when squished that resembles blood . . . and a scene from Dateline. These mites don’t require mates; they’re all female and able to reproduce on their own. They feed on plant juices from grass and, true to their name, clovers.
