When you see a big creepy, crawly spider coming toward you it’s hard to not scream out and run away. Especially one like a wolf spider that tends to be big and hairy and sometimes can easily be mistaken for a baby tarantula from afar.

There are quite a few spiders out there that can definitely be a danger to you, your family, and your pets. But is the wolf spider one of them? What even is a wolf spider?

Today we’re getting into all the details about what makes the wolf spider unique and what you should do if you find them around your home.

What Do Wolf Spiders Look Like?

Wolf spiders are large, hairy spiders, ranging from half an inch to 2 inches long. They have eyes arranged in three rows.  And they are usually grey with brown or dark grey markings on their body. Sounds cute and cuddly, right?

They also have very long legs, and this is for good reason. It helps them to run very quickly to catch their prey. Because unlike many other types of spiders, the wolf spider does not spin a web to catch its prey. Wolf spiders actually hunt their prey down. Getting cuter, huh?

Sometimes people are caught off guard by wolf spiders because they are able to camouflage themselves in their environment so well. They do usually run and hide when they see large animals or people.

Are They Venomous?

wolf spidersThis is probably the most important thing people want to know when encountering a spider. If they bite you, are you going to be seriously harmed? Well, the short answer is, yes they do have venom. However, this venom is there to affect their small prey, not large (or even average-sized) humans.

A wolf spider’s venom has low neurotoxic action, therefore it should not do much damage to us. However, those who may be more sensitive to the venom such as children, the elderly, and people with compromised immune systems may have a more negative reaction.

Even though their venom may not be extremely venomous, the bite can still be painful. But the good thing is that wolf spiders don’t bite people often. In fact, they don’t usually bite unless provoked or threatened.

How to Get Rid of Wolf Spiders

The best way to keep wolf spiders away from your home is to keep the exterior of your home clear of things that they would like to hide in or around. You should clean up any debris around your home and keep your grass at a reasonable height.

If the wolf spiders are finding their way INTO your home, it is through cracks and crevices. To prevent this you should be sure to caulk any that see, fix any window screens that have holes in them, and do a general check for holes around your home.

Once the spiders are inside your home don’t let them get comfortable. They don’t like noise so be sure to vacuum or sweep on the regular to keep them on their toes and get them out of their hiding spots.

And if you absolutely can’t stand the thought of spiders in and around your home, having your home treated by your local pest control experts is the best way to ensure that you don’t have to see that creepy crawlies around your home at all.
