Spiders are awesome creatures. They are essential to most ecosystems and can help to reduce the numbers of harmful insects in your home and yard. However; as beneficial as spiders are, most of us don’t want to share our home with the tiny little, eight-legged critters. If you’ve been lying awake at night wondering how to prevent those spiders from moving in and how many already have, Kapture Pest Control is here to help. Here are our 5 Best Tips on Spider Prevention!

Spider Prevention Tip #1: Start Outside

Spiders usually start their lives outside of your home. Oftentimes they are content to spend their entire lives outside of your home. However, occasionally they will decide the area you have inside looks better than their area outside. That is where we get into trouble. Once spiders get inside they can be very hard to find. And once they start growing a family of their own. . . don’t even get us started.

The best way to prevent this from happening is to remove them from outside of your home. You don’t need any fancy equipment or chemicals for this. All you need is a broom and maybe a hose. When you see webs start to form in the corners of your porch or infront of your windows just knock them down. The fewer spiders living directly outside your home, the fewer that will make their way into your home.

Spider Prevention Tip #2: Lock Them Out

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again you have to seal up those cracks, fix the broken screens and be sure there are no tiny little holes open for spiders to crawl through.

Spider Prevention Tip #3: Turn the Lights Out

If you’ve knocked the webs down time and time again that show up around your front door and they keep coming back, it’s time to look at the light sources. Do you leave your porch light on? Do you have other decorative lights on overnight?

Bugs are drawn to lights and spiders eat bugs. Sometimes preventing spiders from getting into your home and claiming it as their own is as simple as turning the exterior lights out. Then the bugs won’t be buzzing around making your front porch look like the perfect place to put down roots. Or in this case webs.

Spider Prevention Tip #4: Reduce Clutter

Harsh facts time – the average home has approximately 61 spiders in it RIGHT NOW! That’s a lot of spiders already in your home. You may be wondering where on earth are they? I never see spiders. Well the answer is simple, they are hiding.

Spiders are creatures who thrive on hiding. They hide from their prey so they can utilize the element of surprise and they hide from us to prevent being squished by a slipper.

To find hidden spiders just move your couch, your hutch or any large piece of furniture. Also look behind piles of clutter, places like behind the trashcan or in a stack of firewood look very appealing to those creepy crawly creatures.

And inversely to prevent the upwards of 100 spiders from calling your home their own, try to reduce the amount of clutter accumulating in your home and your yard. Especially in spider friendly areas like garages and basements.

If this seems daunting don’t worry, all Kapture Plans include treating spiders multiple times per year, with the smallest plan costing only $29 a month!

Spider Prevention Tip #5: Starve Them

This sounds much crueler than it actually is. The spiders will not starve, they will get hungry and they will leave your home, probably through the same little hole they came in through. To do this you need to reduce their food source.

Spiders don’t eat human food scraps and crumbs but they do eat the things that eat those things; so reducing crumbs is a good place to start.
