Do all Mosquitoes Bite?

Most people see a mosquito and assume that it’s going to land on you and take a big bite. Well we all have bad experiences with mosquitoes so we get it, but that isn’t exactly true.

What Do You Really Know About Mosquitoes?Female mosquitoes are the only ones that bite. Male mosquitoes don’t even have teeth, and can’t bite you at all. Pretty crazy right?

The males are smaller and only feed on plant juices like nectar for energy and survival. And, since they don’t bite, male mosquitoes don’t transmit diseases like their female counterparts, because they don’t bite you in the first place.

Female mosquitoes are the ones that you have to look out for in terms of getting bit on a warm summer’s day. However, they are only looking to bite you when they are trying to get pregnant. When a female is trying to produce an egg, they will need a blood meal. Once they have that, they are able to produce one.

But why do they need OUR blood to produce an egg? Well weirdly enough, it is because our’s and animal blood provides just the right amount of nutrients for their developing eggs

So, if the females are in need of producing an egg, they will be on the lookout for a food source-YOU. Which while it may sound sweet can actually be very harmful to US! So it is best to protect yourself, and your yard against them.

Home Maintenance is Key

You may know already that mosquitoes like to hang out around areas of standing water in your yard. They are breeding grounds for mosquitoes. But did you know that even the smallest areas of water can attract them?

Things like pools, leaking hoses, water features, or old flower pots can be items that attract them. Mosquito larvae develop in water, so adult mosquitoes are attracted to damp soil or standing water to lay their eggs.

Your gutters are usually another place that can hold water and debris, so having your gutters cleaned can greatly reduce your chances of having mosquitoes breed around your home. Mowing and clearing your yard of other lawn debris can also reduce the chances of them living around your yard.

Obviously, it can be nearly impossible to eliminate all the water that can be in our yards so having your yard treated for mosquitoes by your local pest control company is usually the best way to keep them away all summer long.

Mosquitoes Can Be Deadly!

Mosquitoes may be small, and their bite may be small, but they can be deadly. Mosquitoes are actually the most deadly animal in the world. They kill more people than sharks, wasps, and even snake bites. When you think of a mosquito being deadly you may automatically think of Malaria, but they can also spread many other types of diseases.

Mosquitoes can also get infected with viruses or parasites when they bite a person or animal that is infected. The infected mosquito can spread germs to other people or animals through their bites. This can be very dangerous at times.

Sometimes, certain people can have more serious reactions to mosquito bites, like hives, swollen lymph nodes, fever, or swelling. If you ever have a reaction to a bite that is accompanied by symptoms like fever, headache, body aches, and signs of infection you should always go get treatment. Due to the way that mosquitoes bite and exchange blood, it can be a sign of something dangerous.
