Fleas are every pet owners nightmare. Fleas not only cause your pets discomfort, but they can go from a nuisance to an infestation almost quicker than any other critter we encounter on a regular basis. But where do fleas come from? How can you prevent fleas? And what are the best ways to eliminate them from your home and your yard?
How to Prevent Fleas if you Have No Pets
We get this question a lot. Believe it or not you do not need to have pets in your home to have a flea problem. Occasionally fleas can be carried into a home from a friend’s pet or even just on a friend whose pet has fleas. They can also enter the home from the yard. However if you are seeing more than a few fleas in your home on a consistent basis and you can’t quickly identify the source the most likely culprit is squirrels in your attic. Or rodents in your crawlspace.
Fleas do not feed primarily on human blood. If fleas are in your home it’s because there is a steady source of animal blood to feast on. If you have a flea problem it’s because they are feeding on your pet. If you don’t have a pet – it’s time to have your attic and crawlspace inspected– because chances are a wild animal has already self-proclaimed themselves as your pet.
Can I Catch and Kill Fleas with Sticky Pads?
Another common question is can you use those sticky fly catchers to catch fleas. The short answer is yes. Sticky traps will 100% catch and kill fleas. The longer answer is that it is a bit more of a nuisance however.
Sticky traps will catch fleas but they will never be able to catch enough of them. By design these traps only catch what lands on them. You would have to somehow attract all the fleas in your home to one place and convince them to stick themselves to the sticky paper in order for it to be effective. As you can imagine, that is better in theory than in practice.
Is There a More Efficient Way to Prevent Fleas?
Why yes, there is. The most effective way to combat fleas is to get to the source. If you have a dog that is likely the flea magnet. Cats and other house pets can carry fleas as well but the majority of flea cases are found in dogs. Take your pet to the vet and discuss flea treatment options. There are several popular brands on the market like Frontline and NexGard.
That’s not the end of it though, there are likely still thousands of fleas and flea eggs in your home. Now we start cleaning. Remove all pet bedding and thoroughly wash and clean all areas where the pet spends their time. Pet beds, crates and dog houses will always be the most infected areas. Clean these spaces as well as any other spaces in your home paying special attention to using the vacuum cleaner and all of its attachments to suck up every last one.
At this step you can also consider a home treatment but before you purchase an expensive store brand treatment that may or may not be effective please call Kapture first. We offer free phone consultations and will explain your options to you and help you make the best decision for your unique circumstances.
How does Kapture Pest Control Prevent and Kill Fleas?
If you think you’re in need of professional help, Kapture Pest Control is here to help. We utilize what is called a residual treatment that will last up to about 6 months, keeping your home free of fleas for at least that long. The residual treatment stays in place, kills any local fleas quickly and will continue to repel potential new fleas for the above mentioned 6 months.
The treatment also includes a growth regulator. A growth regulator is just a fancy word for transgenerational birth control. The fleas who interact with the treatment will still be able to make babies but those babies will be born without the ability to fully mature thus rendering them barren.
Vampire bugs may be festive at halloween but come Thanksgiving they’ll be nothing more than a nuisance and a health hazard. This two part treatment in addition to the vet’s recommended treatment will ensure that your home, your pet and your family are all safe from these tiny, disease carrying, real life vampires for months to come.
