Ahh the dreaded bed bug! Just the thought of them in your home makes your skin crawl and itch!

Bed bugs bite! And if you have a bed bug problem in your home time is not on your side. You will need to move quickly. But how exactly do you get rid of these nasty, irritating little bugs?

We are here to give you all of the details about the four most common options to get rid of them so you can get back to your normal routine.

Freeze-Out The Bed Bugs

Get Rid of Bed BugsMost people know about chemical options to treat for pests. But, sometimes the thought of using chemicals in your home to get rid of bed bugs can make people a little uneasy. Despite the fact that all residential pest control products are incredibly safe and have been tested thoroughly to ensure that!

However, if you are looking for an eco-friendly option to get rid of your bed bugs, using a cryo-option might be something you may be considering. If you decide to use a freezing method to get rid of your bed bugs, it will not use any chemicals at all.

This sounds great but….. the issue with freezing the bed bugs is that you have to physically touch the pest to get rid of them. And we mean every single one! If you aren’t able to touch the bed bug with the cold treatment, it doesn’t do anything at all. This makes it very difficult to reach the ones hiding out in cracks and crevices within your home. (which is where they prefer to be in the first place!)

So, if you want to try an option where you don’t have to use any chemicals at all in your home, you can attempt a cryo option. But be aware that there may be some bed bugs that you aren’t able to get. And you won’t have any lingering effects from the treatment that will protect your home in the future from the pests returning.

Heat Treatment for Bed Bugs

Treating with heat is another eco-friendly option to get rid of bed bugs in your home. It is a little bit simpler than the cryo-option that we talked about before. You don’t have to individually treat each and every bug.

Bed bugs, like their itchy friend the flea, can also be killed with heat. There are various forms of heat treatment you can use to get rid of bed bugs, but most of the time, once you have an infestation it can be quite involved. You usually have to set up propane heaters, leave the house (because it is going to be HOT), and remove a lot of items from the house (again with the HEAT).

The heat treatment is effective, but if one or two of those creepy crawlers are left roaming around your home, you will have a bed bug problem all over again. This means in addition to treating your home with heat to get rid of bed bugs, you will have to use a chemical treatment option as well to treat residual bed bugs.

Not to mention the process is basically as laborious as moving because you have to physically remove all your property to keep it from combusting or melting into the floor. Furniture, televisions, toys, everything.

Chemical Treatment Options

There are two options when it comes to chemical treatments. There is the old-school chemical option to get rid of bed bugs, that perhaps your parents or grandparents used, and a newer treatment option that has been re-formulated.

Why two different versions of the same chemical treatments?

Bed bugs can adapt very quickly so anything that worked for them isn’t going to work for the bed bugs in your house. These outdated products won’t necessarily be something you will be picking up at a big box store, but they might be something that an older pest control company might be utilizing.

The chemical option that is going to work best for the bed bugs currently in your home is going to be formulated just different enough from the older treatment options to still work on the bed bugs. The chemicals have to be bed bug specific or they won’t work at all-that is KEY.

With either of these chemical treatment options, you are likely to get a couple of months of effectiveness out of the treatment. That is if it works at all. You have to make sure that you are using a pest control company that is using an effective formula.

So What’s the Best Way to Get Rid of Bed Bugs

The bottom line is if you want to get rid of bed bugs for good, you need a chemical formula that is up to date and made specifically for bed bugs. It will give you the quickest and most consistent result. Plus even if choosing a cryo or heat treatment most often they have to be followed up with chemical treatments, so skip the hassle and go straight to the chemical treatment.

With a chemical treatment, you don’t have to worry about having to physically touch every single bug, like with a cryo treatment, or having to prep your home and worry about objects melting like with heat treatment.
