Silverfish are one of those pests that tend to genuinely creep homeowners out. They are a pest that looks like they were ripped right out of the prehistoric era. And that doesn’t sit well with most people at all.

It definitely makes you wonder…could this pest slithering around my home be related to other prehistoric creatures that could take some serious bites out of me if given the chance?

Well, we are here to let you know if silverfish bite, and what exactly to do about these creatures slithering around your home.

Do Silverfish Bite People?

The first concern when you notice any pest around your home is your safety. So people always want to know if a pest is dangerous. Well, the good news when it comes to silverfish is that they are not going to bite people.

However, they can cause a lot of damage to the items inside your home because of their eating habits. Their primary food source is starch. So, they are going to eat things in your homes such as old books, magazines, newspapers, and wallpaper.

Silverfish will actively avoid people and are nocturnal, so you won’t likely see them feasting with your own eyes. So, the sign that you have a silverfish problem will likely be a yellow residue (fecal matter) that they leave behind after eating.

How Do Silverfish Get in Your Home?

silverfish biteSo, they won’t bite you which is a great thing, but how did they even get in your home in the first place? And what do they want?

Silverfish love dark and damp areas. So, if you are providing this place for them they will find a way in, they are also very small so they can find the tiniest spots to get through. If there is an unsealed area around your home, they will find it.

They will be hiding out in places like your attics, basements, bathrooms, kitchens, and other areas that provide them with a moist, cool area with starches for them to feast on.

And just because the winter is coming doesn’t mean these pests will slow down. They are known to adapt and will keep going all year long. So this is a pest you will likely see more of once the weather starts to cool off.

How to Get Rid of Silverfish

Even though silverfish don’t bite you still don’t want these pests squirming around your home. If you have a silverfish problem and need them gone there are several options for you to get rid of them.

The first step is always going to be prevention to keep them and any other pests from making their way back in. This includes taking some time to do some things like sealing any cracks in the foundation of your home, replacing window screens, repairing caulking, repairing leaks, and just general pest proofing of your home.

But you can also try some DIY methods to try to get rid of your silverfish problem. Some options include things like Diatomaceous Earth sprinkling around your house or setting up silverfish traps. However, sometimes due to the hardiness of these pests, DIY methods aren’t always successful and it is necessary to call in a professional pest control expert.
