Tricky Reproducers, Wood-Digging Deviants, and Biting Basement Dwellers

Pests are abundant in Verona, with different species showing up indoors at different times of the year. Some of New Jersey’s most common pests include mites, mice, ants, wasps, spiders, and roaches.

Clover mites are a type of arachnid, rather than an insect. They are extremely tiny creatures, so tiny that opening a door or walking by can create a strong enough gust to blow them off the kitchen counter and into the living room. Unlike most animals, clover mites can reproduce without mates; in fact, the entire species is female, reproducing by essentially cloning themselves. This creates a tricky situation from an infestation perspective; you only need one to end up with tons.

Carpenter ants don’t enter your homes to bid on your basement remodel; they seek shelter to set up nests, find food and warmth, and keep their species thriving. Their name comes from their habit of excavating wood; they tunnel deep into decks, walls, floors, and siding, often going unnoticed for years until the structural damage they’ve caused becomes obvious. 

Centipedes are leggy creatures that range from small to sell-your-home enormous. The largest documented centipede is found in South America, not Verona. Known as the Amazonian Giant Centipede, it can reach nearly a foot in length. It delivers a painful bite and feeds on everything from scorpions, frogs, and spiders to snakes, rodents, and bats.

Black widows are terrible spouses . . . likely to end up on a spider-themed episode of Snapped. The females are infamous for eating their mates, although this doesn’t always happen. Sometimes, males get away; not all females take part in this relationship-ruining ritual. Although feared by humans, black widows are shy and elusive, biting only if disturbed or trapped. Most local bites occur when cleaning out window wells, organizing crawl spaces, lifting up stepping stones, or digging through boxes or drawers in basements and garages.
