Summit: An Elevated Experience

Summit is a New Jersey town with a name that brings attitude to its altitude; it has one of the highest elevations in the county. While 371 feet above sea level isn’t particularly lofty compared to other regions across the US (Denver, Colorado, for example, is 5,280 feet high), it’s enough to make the borough cooler, hilly, and alluring to those looking to escape more densely populated areas.

This mighty municipality played a role in the Revolutionary War (although it hadn’t been established as an independent entity just yet). Today, it’s more about green fields than red coats. It developed as a transportation hub early, finding its place as the railroad industry came to life: The main station still offers direct service to Newark and New York City.  Downtown, the walkable business district acts like the cherry on top of the city’s allure, showcasing cafes, boutiques, eclectic restaurants, and cultural venues.

Survivors and Thrivers

Summit summons pests of all kinds, from furry and four-legged to fliers, spiders, singers, and stingers.

Cockroaches are exceptional survivors that have been around for more than 300 million years. They’re also terrific athletes; some can run up to three miles an hour. They’re able to eat just about anything, hide from danger, and change their behavior to adapt to their circumstances, making them among the most difficult infestations to deal with in your home.

Crickets have ears located on their front legs. Only the males chirp, doing so at a rate dictated by temperature. They have different songs, changing their tunes based on whether they’re calling, courting, or trying to ward off a threat. Crickets taste with their feet! Houseflies do this, too; landing on anything and everything, they up the odds of contaminating your counters and tabletops. These pests carry tons of pathogens, but they themselves are surprisingly clean; they groom themselves meticulously like cats.

Fleas are unbelievable jumpers and use their strong hind legs to leap from host to host. They typically infest your home by hijacking your pets; their bodies are designed to easily move through fur. They aren’t as disease-spreading as mosquitoes or ticks, but they do transmit tapeworms as well as bacteria. Of course, historically, fleas were extremely dangerous: the rat flea spread the plague that devastated 14th-century Europe.
