Short Hills is an Aptly Named Suburban Sanctuary

Short Hills is aptly named, with a tickling, rising terrain that sways back and forth, ebbing and flowing along regal foliage and polished residential neighborhoods. Nestled in a nook on the South Mountain Reservation, it’s an outdoor lover’s paradise, offering an abundance of recreational activities. Locals often lace up their hiking boots to hit the trails, set out at sunrise to explore pockets of wooded wonderlands, or cast a line from the lush lakeside shore.

Technically, it’s not a town but rather an unincorporated community in Essex County, governed by Millburn Township. Historically, it was destined to become a suburban sanctuary from the get-go, envisioned as a welcoming neighborhood as early as the 1870s. In fact, it’s considered one of the nation’s first planned suburbs. It was developed around a railroad, taking advantage of the transportation of the time and offering easy back-and-forth commuting to the city. Residents come from all around, but it’s especially attractive to executives, lawyers, entrepreneurs, professors, hedge fund managers, and financial whiz kids. The area is regarded for its quiet lifestyle, family-orientedness, strong schools, philanthropy, and civic involvement.

Pesky Parasites, Varied Beetles, and Mistaken Identities

Short Hills is on the short list of favorite places for pests to live. Locals encounter a range of creatures depending on the season.

Bed bugs don’t just camp out in your mattress; they infest baseboards, lamps, comforters, furniture, and more. They’re parasitic creatures that feast on their favorite meal (YOU) during the night, but they’re far from insatiable. In fact, they can go for several months without pulling up to the People Pub and ordering a Bloody Mary.

Although they’re often linked to shady hotels and tight-knit quarters, they’re not totally attracted to clutter. Instead, they’re more drawn to body heat.

Mosquitos are also parasitic creatures with a terrible reputation; largely because of malaria, they’re considered the most dangerous animals on earth. Only the females bite, sucking blood as part of their reproductive cycles; males feed on nectar. You can run from these flying fiends, but you can’t hide; they detect human breath from over 100 feet away.

Beetles are the most prominent species on the planet, making up roughly a quarter of all animal species. With so many different beetles, each possesses distinct talents. Some beetles shoot boiling-hot chemicals at their predators; others collect water on their backs. Beetles are also the heavyweight champions of the world; some lift over 1,000 times their body weight.

Water bugs are common Garden State critters, typically found in Short Hills lakes, ponds, and reservoirs. They’re known for their painful bites . . .with your tiny toes a prime target (they’re referred to as “toe biters”). While they occasionally make their way into homes and buildings, alleged sightings are often cases of mistaken identity. Roaches and water bugs look similar, and roaches are much more likely to end up in your bathroom shower or kitchen cabinet.
