Rutherford
Professional Pests Control

Rutherford is a dynamic New Jersey borough known for its lush vegetation, walkable downtown, and diverse community. While popular among commuters, due to its proximity to the Big Apple, it’s home to a wide range of people from all walks of life. Pests also come in all shapes and sizes; they invade homes and businesses in search of food and shelter.

Rutherford’s Diverse, Dynamic, and Verdant Vibe

Rutherford is a suburban expanse within close proximity to the Meadowlands and the Passaic River. Although practically knocking on New York City’s door (with Manhattan roughly seven miles away), it feels like it’s on the other side of the world. It’s regarded for its lush vegetation and fabulous foliage, peppered among residential neighborhoods and a delightfully walkable downtown (with a strong arts and culture presence and literary leanings). Its location makes it desirable for commuters, but it’s not just Broadway businesspeople and Wall Street wanderers who lay down roots here; its diversity, dynamic vibe, and riverfront views draw people from a variety of backgrounds.

Historically, the area emerged in the late 1800s. It was originally called Boiling Springs because of its natural groundwater, but was renamed in honor of John Rutherfurd, a New Jersey senator and land surveyor. The modern-day spelling was adopted to honor President Rutherford B. Hayes (former U.S. Commander in Chief and a highly respected Civil War hero). William Carlos Williams, the American-Puerto Rican poet known for pioneering Imagism, is also linked to the borough; he was born here in 1883, and coming full circle, died here 79 years later.

Mother Nature’s Destructive Nuisances

Like other cities in the Garden State, Rutherford is home to plenty of pests, including some of the most destructive in Mother Nature’s repertoire.

Termites are the most expensive pest in the US (and they cost billions globally). Their around-the-clock activity, insatiable appetites, and long lives make them especially destructive to anything made of wood. While they favor things like attics, doorframes, and subfloors, they can also destroy wooden furniture from the inside out.

Rodents, such as mice and rats, are costly as well. Like termites, their destruction is linked to their chewing habits, although this isn’t always food-based. Because their incisors never stop growing, they must chew to keep their teeth trimmed, which makes insulation, drywall, boxes, clothing, and just about anything else fair game. They can cause double the damage by chewing electrical wiring; not only do they destroy the wire, but they also increase the risk of fire. Their disease-spreading tendencies (which termites lack) are problematic, too; they transmit a variety of viruses and bacteria through direct and indirect contact.

Carpenter ants excavate wood to create tunnels and build nests. They prefer wood that is already weakened (such as decayed or moisture-logged) and can often act as the straw that breaks the camel’s back when it comes to structural integrity. Like termites, their destruction is hard to spot at first; it also occurs at a slower rate, which means you might not notice it until the deck, porch, or chair you’re sitting in collapses.

Carpenter bees behave in similar ways to carpenter ants and also excavate wood to lay eggs. Geometrical geniuses, they bore into wood through perfect circles, creating tunnels in Rutherford’s eaves, sidings, and more. They tend to go back to the same spot year after year, which worsens structural damage. These buzzers draw woodpeckers, too: sharply beaked, feathered friends who peck into the tunnels in a quest for the bees’ eggs (which they eat), widening the gaps and adding to the destruction.
