Rockaway: A Creek Between Two Hills
Rockaway is a small, walkable town defined by dramatic and stunning terrain; here, the highlands soar just a little higher. Steeper slopes, loftier elevations, narrower valleys, and more rugged ridges blend together, backed by Green Pond Mountain and the gentle lull of the Rockaway River. Old stone work, abandoned mines, and hardwood forests shape the land, subtly nodding to the past while modern-day life merges neighborly love, community reliability, and a strong sense of volunteer spirit.
The city’s name comes from a Native American term meaning “place of sands” or “creek between two hills.” It was established as a borough in 1894, although it existed as a township long before. Its first Presbyterian church was built in 1758, and the adjacent graveyard is filled with many Revolutionary War veterans. The town’s current church isn’t quite as old; it was built in 1832.

Rockaway’s Rodents, Insects, and Arachnids
With its lush landscape, variable vegetation, and whimsical woodlands, Rockaway doesn’t keep pests away. That’s where Kapture comes in! We work to remove all kinds of trespassing troublemakers among New Jersey’s variety.
Spotted lanternflies are, in many ways, the new pests on the block . . . hanging tough in your garden. First documented in New Jersey in 2018, these insects hop and glide through foliage, stressing trees and vines and causing direct and indirect damage. Their name is enough to irritate Merriam-Webster, as these creatures aren’t flies; they’re closely related to cicadas. Springtails are more aptly named, recognized for their spring-like tails, which they use to launch themselves several inches. They love moisture; when they enter your home, they’re mostly found in bathrooms or basements. While often mistaken for insects, they’re actually arthropods.
Crickets are viewed as lucky in some cultures, and spotting one in your garage may be a sign of good things to come; spotting an infestation on the other hand, isn’t as fortunate. Fun cricket fact: Only male crickets chirp, and they tend to chirp faster as temperatures rise (who needs the weather app when you have Jiminy?).
Wasps recognize human faces and remember people who try to harm them (Dear Diary, Mary Anne came at me with the fly swatter again. That’s strike two!). Unlike bees, they can sting repeatedly, and they build nests overnight, with wasp metropolises appearing as if out of nowhere.
Whatever Rockaway pests are eating away at your trees, feasting on your doorframe, or infesting your pantry, Kapture can help!
