Rahway’s Riverside Charm & Suburban Flair
Rahway is a riverside town in Union County that effortlessly mixes Mother Nature with suburbia, diversity, and community spirit. Located at a crossroads of commerce, culture, and the common good, it’s 20 miles from Manhattan, offering an escape from chaos without sacrificing the convenience a big city brings. Parklands, a walkable downtown, major rail lines, mom-and-pop shops, corporations, and highways round out the area, creating a best-of-both-worlds existence for long-time residents and just-arrived newbies.
Historically, this city reaches back centuries, first inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans. Officially incorporated in 1858, a few years before the Civil War, the borough flourished during the industrial era thanks to its focus on transportation and manufacturing. Today, the dynamic town is a mecca of the arts, rich in heritage, and frequented by foodies; festivals, farmer’s market, eclectic eateries, comedy shows, and film screenings draw locals and those across the state.

Rodents and Other Nuisances
Keeping pests away is always a bit of a challenge; the inviting New Jersey landscape welcomes creatures and critters of all kinds.
Mice are especially problematic and gifted at sneaking in through the tiniest cracks and gaps. Despite their small size, they’re excellent at reaching lofty surfaces and can jump as high as a foot; they can also climb textured walls, which is why they can be found everywhere from the basement to the kitchen cabinets. They’re romantics, too; mice sing high–pitched, ultrasonic love songs to attract mates. Rats also give off ultrasonic sounds; they laugh when tickled and, who knows, perhaps when they successfully infiltrate your pantry. Like mice, rats are prolific breeders and exceptional at breaking and entering; while mice can squeeze through a gap roughly the size of a dime, rats need one closer to the size of a quarter.
Houseflies are common indoor nuisances that enter Rahway homes and buildings most often through tattered window screens or open doors. They can be pesky outside, too, especially when it comes to garbage and rotting food. Adult flies lay eggs in trash cans and compost bins . . . eggs that hatch into maggots and feed on decaying material. While maggots gross out the average person, they do have some hidden talents; they’ve been used medically to clean wounds.
Mosquitoes aren’t just annoying; they’re dangerous. Known for their disease-spreading ways, they’re largely regarded as the most harmful animal on Earth. They’re particular, as well; if you feel as though you’re always bitten, it’s probably not in your head. Mosquitoes are highly attracted to those who exhale more carbon dioxide, such as people of above average size, pregnant women, and exercisers. They’re also attracted to lactic acid, ammonia, certain fatty acids, and uric acid, and some people naturally emit more of these chemicals. In fact, roughly 20% of people are considered “high attractors.” Other things that lure mosquitoes include Type O blood (people with Type O are generally bitten twice as often as those with Type A), dark colors (such as black, navy, and red), and sweat.
