Ho-Ho-Kus: An Enchanting Expanse of Elegance

Ho-Ho-Kus is a stunning New Jersey town cradled inside an enchanting expanse. Locals groove with the groves of woodlands and gentle waterways that surround historic homes, looming oaks, and serene streets. The borough was among the earliest Dutch settlements of the 18th century, and a Netherlands niche is still evident today in its architecture and landmarks.

A town with a strong commuter presence, it’s attractive for its proximity to New York City and a favorite place for affluent businesspeople to put down their residential roots. Families flock here as well, lured in by the village-like atmosphere, excellent schools, formative fingerprints of the past, and quiet suburban experiences. Culturally, the town maintains a strong sense of identity and community, buoyed by a subtly elegant aesthetic, a glimmer of glamor seen in homes, public spaces, and businesses. With privacy, tradition, and quality of life held in high regard, it’s a city that often feels like a fairytale, welcoming those seeking their happily-ever-after.

Eat, Prey, Lurk

As in other Bergen County boroughs, pests thrive in Ho-Ho-Kus. They’re found on a range of properties and enter homes and buildings in search of food, shelter, and warmth (though some accidentally get in after taking a wrong turn).

Daddy longlegs is the alias of cellar spiders (although some arthropods, such as harvestmen and crane flies, also use this nickname). They wrap their prey alive and liquefy it, slowly drinking it like humans sipping on a chocolate malt in a soda shop. They don’t just invade basements and window wells; they invade other spiders’ webs, including bigger and more dangerous species. Yellow jackets love rotting food and garbage, which is why they crash your picnic and barbecues. They chew their prey and feed it to their larvae. Then, in a type of insect recycling meets wasp waste recovery, larvae secrete a sugary liquid that the adults drink. Yellowjackets, unlike bees, can sting, sting, sting until they tire. Often, they attack in coordinated formation, releasing pheromones that cue their friends to join in all the stabby fun

Stink bugs are known for their pungent reputation; they release a lingering cocktail of chemicals when threatened, disturbed, or trapped. Crushing them only makes the odor worse and attracts other stink bugs to Ho-Ho-Kus properties, flashing a distress SOS sign like a buggy bat signal. These smelly creatures tend to gather in voids, overwintering inside walls and emerging when the weather warms and humidity increases.

Odorous house ants are also known for their reeking rep; they smell like a rotten coconut when crushed. This sweet-but-sour emission emerges when the ant’s ruptured body releases chemicals. However, it’s their colony size rather than their odor that is truly worrisome. Odorous house ants can form supercolonies with multiple queens, making them especially difficult to get rid of. When sprayed with over-the-counter products, they tend to scatter and then regroup elsewhere, reforming their colonies and vowing revenge.
