Demarest is a tiny residential borough snuggled inside northeastern Bergen County. It’s only 15 miles from New York City, but it feels a world away. Woodlands, rolling terrain, and watersheds zigzag across the landscape, giving the region a countryside feel. Beetles, one of the most abundant species on the planet, are a frequently encountered pest throughout the state. Distinct from other insects, some beetles use the Milky Way to navigate, relying not on stars but the galaxy’s band of lights to orient themselves. Because many beetles are drawn to chocolate, they might use the Milky Way to find a Milky Way.

Rats are so intelligent that they can perform tricks for food, learn to drive tiny cars, and solve complex mazes faster than some types of primates. They’re believed to mentally rehearse routes before journeying down them, with studies revealing that they plan ahead, and their fear of new things makes them hard to catch. While some rats are kept as pets, rat infestations pose a problem because of the mammal’s rapid reproduction, tendency to carry diseases, and destruction caused by their ever-growing teeth, which require constant chewing.

Spotted lanternflies are newcomers to New Jersey; they were first documented here in 2018. While it’s rare to find these pests indoors, they commonly infest (and destroy!) gardens, vineyards, orchards, and hops. They’re especially damaging to Demarest maple trees, fruit trees, ornamental trees, and hardwoods . . . leaving behind a sticky waste that grows black mold.

Crickets are found in mulch beds, sheds, garages, and basements. Only the males chirp, doing so to attract female mates, deter threats, and ward off rivals. This natural thermometer isn’t as accurate as the Weather App, but it’s surprisingly decent, often predicting the true temperature within five or so degrees.
