Not-So-Nice Mice, Scary Spiders, and Elusive Ants

A popular place for pests . . . they’re attracted to its diverse landscapes, varied structures, and suburban opportunities. Infestations show a seasonal pattern, with certain trespassing tricksters being more stubborn during warmer or cooler weather.

Mice are as common in suburbs as no-soliciting signs and solar lighting (although they frequent commercial districts as well). They’re highly intelligent creatures, which means you should never take it personally if one evades your traps! They’re able to fit through spaces the size of a dime, are athletic enough to climb textured surfaces (like Spidermouse), can jump a foot high, and can use their whiskers to get their bearings and navigate total darkness. They can also memorize multiple food routes, leaving scent trails that act as a GPS, and they produce ultrasonic sounds to warn each other of danger (Rodent Red Alert: Theo the tomcat is hanging around the shed).

Black widows are less common than mice but typically more feared. Although they’re not aggressive and really do want to enjoy their lives in peace and quiet, they’ll attack if caught off guard. People are occasionally bitten when pulling storage items out of crawlspaces, cleaning window wells, or putting on a shoe that an eight-legged lurker has wandered into. 

Pharaoh ants are a common ant found in Cedar Grove (although many ant species frequent the Garden State). Rather than a single queen, colonies have a royal court, with multiple queens reigning and cooperating. They’re among the most notoriously difficult ants to get rid of with DIY interventions, due to their tendency to split their colonies and scatter their nests when threatened. 

Yellowjackets are insects known for their anger management issues. They’re aggressive all year long, but they amp things up in late summer when their nests are large, and food supplies start to deplete. While many live underground, in sheds, or in wall voids, they emerge daily, showing up at your barbecue and deck-side dinner. Unlike bumblebees (insects that lose their stingers), yellowjackets might engage in an endless stabbing spree, stopping only when they tire.
