So you want to be a pest control technician? Do you think you have what it takes to squash the competition?
When thinking of becoming a pest control technician you think of the obvious requirements like being able to handle the gross bug factors, but there is so much more to it than that.
What kind of characteristics are we looking for that are going to set you apart from other applicants? We are going to give you the inside scoop of how we look for the best of the best in our technicians. Let’s get to it!
Typical Employee Hiring Process
Like all employers, we have to go through the typical hiring process. We gather a group of usually around 100 potential candidates who want to be a pest control technician. These are people who we feel may work well within the Kapture family. They are clean-cut and professional and our customers will feel at ease with them.
We do the usual background screening and drug testing that you would see with most interview processes. On top of this, we screen all potential employees through Quality Pro Certification. This is basically another background check so we can verify our potential employees are up to the standards that we like to set for our company and our customers alike.
The interview process with our potential candidates is never rushed. It is not unlike us to have multiple interviews with candidates. We want to be very confident in our final decisions. Who we choose to hire is basically the face of Kapture Pest Control, and we want the very best.
Once You Are Hired as A Pest Control Technician
You have been hired to be a Pest Control Technician! First of all, that’s amazing! Secondly, prepare for training! Training our technicians is very important to us. We want our technicians to be thoroughly prepared for their positions.
Some companies will just throw their candidates into the ring and just hope that the best will survive. This isn’t gladiator. We aren’t going to do that to you. Trust us.
We give our pest control technicians 3 months of training. It will be a combination of traditional studying where you will learn a lot about the job with manuals, books, etc., and on the field training. However, most of your training will come from being on the field.
Why is our training so long? Well, it used to be only 1 month long, but we extended it because when you are performing pest control treatments those treatments may need adjusting after a while. And adjustments don’t happen overnight. We feel like with an extended training period you can really learn from the overall process and in turn be even more ready when the time comes to go it alone!
In The Field Training
In the field, training is where most of your training will be taking place. It is really where we can see who has the stuff to be a great pest control technician. There are some pretty important skills you have to possess in order to nail your in-the-field training.
For your in-the-field training, you have to be a great problem solver. Obviously, those pests aren’t going to always make finding them the easiest thing. So, we have to play detective A LOT! You have to be a person that is going to take the time to do a deep investigation of the customer’s home and get it right the first time.
Pest control often requires a lot of experimentation so you have to be able to evaluate the entire space and create the exact right treatment in the exact right places, it takes patience.
If you are rushing through your job, you can miss things and have to go back. We like people who take the time to figure it out the first time. Not just to save us time and money. But, for the sake of our customers as well. We like our customers knowing that we want to get it right for them the first time.
And, one of the most important parts, being able to handle the hazards of the job. You have to have a strong stomach with no aversions to crawling around in some dirty gross places. You are definitely going to crawl around in crawl spaces, basements, attics-think anywhere a creepy-crawly pest would be and that’s where you might be.
