The Pesky Pests of Plainfield

Pests enjoy Plainfield as much as people. Due to its lush vegetation, inviting landscape, varied structures, and welcoming climate, all sorts of creatures call this town home. In other words, Queen City also refers to the royal court of wasps, termites, and ants!

Rats can be found in both residential and commercial buildings. They’re not quite as common as mice, but they might be harder to get rid of: Rats are highly intelligent, which means they know how to avoid capture, they’re hesitant about eating unfamiliar things (such as toxins), and they’re well-versed in accessing entry points. Rats are so smart that they can learn to drive tiny cars in lab experiments, a task they seem to enjoy (nevermind The Mouse and the Motorcycle, let’s hear about The Rat and the Range Rover).

Cicadas are especially loud creatures often heard as the weather warms. Only the males make noise, and do so in an attempt to attract females (have they tried flowers?). Cicadas often sing together to both up the odds of mate attraction (putting a new spin on group dating) and to protect themselves from predators. While the sound might feel somewhat nostalgic on a summer’s evening, it can be very loud, too: with built-in amplifiers, cicadas are as noisy as lawnmowers and motorcycles.

Earwigs are typically found in gardens, but it’s not unusual for them to venture into your Plainfield home. Even when they stay outdoors, they may nest in inconvenient places, such as a hide-a-key box. They often look scary because of their pinchers, and they can release a foul-smelling odor when threatened. This is often described as musty, rancid, or bitter.

Ladybugs, like crickets, are traditionally regarded as good luck, but a single ladybug is much different from an infestation. They’re not seen outdoors very often in winter; some enter a dormant stage to survive the cold before re-emerging once temperatures rise. However, certain ladybugs like Asian Lady Beetles often seek warmth indoors . . . and where there is one there are many. Fun Fact: Although spotted or dotted ladybugs are common, not all of them follow a polka-dot pattern. Some ladybugs are spotless; others are striped.
