Despite what we have been shown in fairy tales, mice aren’t running around serving as sidekicks with adorable little backup vocal abilities. When we hear mice making noises in our homes, it comes out as squeaking, not sweet little voices like cartoon princesses might have heard.
So what exactly are mice squeaking about? What are they trying to tell us or each other? We are here to give you all the info on mice and help you decipher their messages!
Why Are There Mice in My Home?
Chances are you have heard a mouse at some point in your life. Squeaking is the way a mouse communicates, but if you notice the sound, you are actually hearing several mice squeaking as they talk to each other. A distinction with a very BIG DIFFERENCE!
Mice will reproduce at a fast rate. Once you lay eyes on a single mouse running by, you will soon be surprised to learn there are more hiding in your home. Mice will look for a way inside your home to live within the walls, attic, or basement. The goal of the mice squeaking is to hunt for food and warmth. Once they know they have access to food and a comfortable place to build nests, they will start to grow their families.
Quiet nights at your house might now be filled with mice squeaking. That is not a sound that is going to put you to sleep. Mice eat anything and everything, and this is a risk for your home and family. They build their nest by chewing through insulation and electrical wires to create a space to start a family of their own. The chewing of electrical wires creates a huge fire risk that is sure to have mice squeaking louder than ever.
Plastic containers will not stop mice from being able to chew through it to look for stuff to take back to their nests. In their search for food, mice will chew through plastic to try to reach it. Once they get to the food, it becomes contaminated. Mice carry illnesses, and that can spread to you and your family by coming in contact with food and surfaces they have crossed.
Hearing the sounds of mice squeaking throughout your home is a sign to contact a professional pest control company to help you solve the problem. You never want to wait until a problem gets too out of hand before you get it taken care of; you never know how many mice have taken up residence in your home already, and once one dies in your wall—your nose will remind you every day how much sooner you should have called.
All Noises Are Not The Same
Just like humans, mice use their sounds as their own type of language. They have different types of squeaks for different situations. While it may seem like we are just hearing the same sound over and over, that isn’t the case. Mice squeaking uses a combination of different tones, some of which are high-frequency, that humans aren’t always able to hear.
So what exactly do these different noises mean? Starting from the tiniest mice, baby mice squeaking will mean they have been left by their mothers and feel lonely, or they will squeak when they return or even need milk. Male mice squeaking will happen when they are near a female to the point of almost singing to her (don’t get any ideas—once again, it isn’t like a fairy tale). When two males are together, they will squeak incessantly, this is to assert dominance.
You will most likely start to hear all of the noise from mice squeaking during the nighttime. This is when mice are most likely to be active, due to being nocturnal in nature. At night, a house is typically quiet, which will make it a lot easier to hear the mice squeaking nearby and through the walls. These curious creatures are looking for sources of food and water in your home while you sleep, or try to, anyways.
How To Stop Mice Squeaking
The ultimate goal of the first sounds of mice squeaking is to never hear it again. So how do we achieve this?
Well, you can first take steps to mouse-proof your home. Take away their food and water sources by keeping food sealed in containers that can’t be chewed through, and keep your pet food sealed up as well. You will also want to seal any entryways into your home. Using steel wool is a great option as mice cannot easily chew through steel wool. Your yard should also be regularly maintained and free of debris to keep nesting at a minimum outside.
Having your home treated for mice is the best way to stop a mice squeaking problem. Mice carry a lot of diseases. And you don’t want them anywhere near your home or your family. Wherever they have been, you can tell because they leave their droppings everywhere! The droppings themselves can also make you sick. When you sweep the droppings up, it can release a contaminant into the air. This will cause illness and breathing issues for those with respiratory problems.
If you’re not one to get squeamish, you can set traps throughout your home. This would require you to bait and set each trap, along with handling the mouse that gets caught in it. Risk for illness by not properly handling the mouse traps is something to be aware of and is why you should also consult a pest control specialist about mice squeaking guests.
