This time of year is ladybug nesting season. This means you are one of two types of people right now. A person with a ladybug infestation or a person without a ladybug infestation.

What is a ladybug infestation?

You can’t be infested with ladybugs the same way you can with roaches or mice. If you have too many ladybugs in your home or swarms of ladybugs it is only because they are hunkering down for the winter. Ladybugs will leave again as soon as the weather warms up and really had no interest in calling your home their home.

From the ladybug’s perspective, you are more of an Airbnb than a long term residence.

Are ladybug infestations dangerous?

Neither ladybugs nor their infestations are dangerous. Ladybugs are good bugs. They eat tiny little insects and most farmers will tell you they are literal crop savers! They carry no diseases, pose no threats to humans, and do no damage to your home.

So wait, do I have to treat for ladybugs?

That depends on if you have a ladybug problem and if you have a problem with the ladybugs. You do not NEED to treat them in either situation if they aren’t bothering you. Ladybugs, again, will not harm you or your home.

However, if you have a ladybug problem in your home this means you have swarms of ladybugs in your house. That can be very annoying. So if you have a ladybug problem in the sense that there are enough ladybugs in the home to be a bother to you, then you can treat them.

If you do not see ladybugs in your house you do not need to treat them. If you are seeing ladybugs but are unbothered you can just be a gracious ladybug landlord until spring – treatment is not necessary.

What are my best treatment options?

too many ladybugs in my homeIf you have hundreds of ladybugs in your home you can simply vacuum them up. No chemicals required. You can do this directly into a standard vacuum cleaner and empty the bin. Or you can use the hose attachment with some stocking or cheesecloth on the end to capture the ladybugs and then release them outside.

If you require a pest control expert, like Kapture Pest Control, we can locate the core of the swarm and eliminate them from there, leaving a residual treatment in place that will last well into the spring.

We offer free phone consultations and customizable monthly maintenance plans.

How can I prevent them before they swarm?

The best way to prevent a ladybug swarm is to seal up all the cracks and openings to your home so that they cannot get inside in the first place. Ladybugs are not very intentional about their nesting sites. They are simply looking for a warm place to lodge. If your home is harder to get into than your neighbors’ then you probably won’t end up with a swarm.

But they are random, so don’t beat yourself up too much!

One final thought

Ladybugs are the good bugs and are nothing to be afraid of. They cannot hurt you or your home. On the other hand, ladybugs don’t travel in notoriously small groups and the sheer number of their swarms can, at times, be too much for even the biggest bug enthusiast to handle.

Treatment is sometimes necessary. Kapture Pest Control is ready when you need us.
