Types of Beetles We Handle

Drugstore Beetles

Drugstore beetles attack stored products. Besides causing direct damage by feeding, they also contaminate lots of packaged food products. Drugstore beetles can be found anywhere in the world but are particularly abundant in warmer regions or in heated structures. They are similar in appearance to the cigarette beetle.

Cigarette Beetles

Cigarette beetles are similar in appearance to the drugstore beetle. They are small, squat, reddish brown adults. Both of them are less than 1/8 inch long. They feed on almost all dried plant and animal material including tobacco; spices such as red pepper, cayenne pepper, ginger and paprika. Cigarette beetles and drugstore beetles can penetrate most paper packaging materials. Cigarette beetles can fly.

Confused Flour Beetle

Confused flour beetles are one of the most destructive pests in silos, warehouses, grocery stores and homes. They attack grain and other food products. Unlike other beetles, they are not able to fly. The name confused flour beetle comes from the fact that it’s often times confused with the red flour beetle.

Red Flour Beetle

Red flour beetles are similar in appearance to the confused flour beetle. Both of them are elongated flat shiny reddish brown adults. They are both about 1/8 inch long. They frequently invade flour mills to feed on cereal grains and dried foods including flour, cereal, nuts, spice and many others. They are not able to penetrate most packaging materials. Red flour beetles are strong flyers.

Sawtoothed Grain Beetle

Sawtoothed grain beetles feed on grain products as well as chocolate, drugs and tobacco. They often times invade food manufacturing, storage and retail facilities. Like most beetles, they can be found in home pantries as well. Sawtoothed grain beetles are similar in appearance to the merchant grain beetle.

Merchant Grain Beetle

The merchant grain beetles are similar in appearance to the merchant grain beetle. Both are about 1/8 inch long. Both are elongate dark brown and flat. They do not fly. They are not able to penetrate packaging flour other than very thin wrappings such as cellophane. The main distinguishing factor between the merchant grain beetle and the sawtoothed grain beetle is its larger eyes and by the shape of the head.

Dermestid Beetle

Dermestid beetles are several different species of oval shaped beetles. It includes the black carpet beetle and the Khapra beetle. There are few distinguishing characteristics between the different types. They feed on waste grain, grain dust, flour, powdered milk, candy, cigarettes and a number of other items. One way to detect them is that they shed their cast larval skins.
