New Jersey’s Pathogen Peddlers

Pests in Saddle Brook and the surrounding areas can be found running through your kitchen cabinets, nesting in your attic, and commandeering the corner of your basement, but they’re more than nuisances. They’re pathogen peddlers! 

Ticks are among the most potent disease spreaders in the state. While they can transmit a variety of bacteria and viruses, they’re most infamous for their connection to Lyme disease. Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that causes rash, fever, chills, muscle aches, nerve pain, joint swelling, and more. Although it’s very rarely fatal, it can be serious in instances of neurological or cardiac involvement or untreated, prolonged infection.

Mosquitoes spread a variety of illnesses. Globally, malaria is among the deadliest, affecting millions of people worldwide. Dengue fever, yellow fever, Zika, and chikungunya are also common. In Saddle Brook, mosquitoes are most likely to carry West Nile, Jamestown Canyon virus disease, and Eastern equine encephalitis. 

Stinging insects (such as wasps, hornets, and yellowjackets) don’t spread disease, but they can trigger allergies (sometimes severe reactions). Some spiders, such as the Black Widow and Brown Recluse, inject venom, which can cause severe pain, cramps, and systemic symptoms. In very rare instances, a recluse’s bite can trigger the destruction of red blood cells, requiring medical care.
