Rockleigh is a tiny borough with a big heart. Home to only a few hundred people and weighing in at roughly one square mile, it fills itself to the brim with meadows, forested slopes, rocky ridges, and grand estates on expansive lots. Small brooks and waterfalls add a storybook element, underscoring its rural razzle and dazzle. Among the most rustic arcadias in the county, it offers the quintessential escape from the big-city drama of nearby New York.

Historically, the area reaches way back into the past, playing a part in America’s Revolution, as soldiers marched through the grounds on their way to battle. It wasn’t established as a borough until more than a century later, however, becoming officially incorporated in 1923. Today, the town is known for its peace and quiet, subtle affluence, and residential dominance. It lacks the commercial districts of other boroughs, opting to be a lot more country (and very little rock and roll). Home to Long-Living Pests and Rapid Reproducers

Rockleigh may be a small borough, but it’s still home to plenty of pests. Some of these pests are among the longest-living in the animal kingdom, making them hard to get rid of without professional help.

Termites are well-regarded for their longevity, with queen termites living 40 or more years. Colonies themselves can survive for decades, staying active year-round and destroying structures by feasting on cellulose (wood’s main component) nonstop.

Carpenter ants also enjoy long lives, with queens living around 15 years or longer. Colonies are especially tricky because satellite nests create a Whack-a-Mole phenomenon when trying to rid your home of an infestation. Treating one nest is often futile, as another nearby nest pops up.

Ticks are also resilient; they can live for years and go for long periods without a blood meal. They’re among the most patient pests, biding their time outdoors while they wait for a deer, dog, bird, or human to walk by. Unlike other pests, their bites are hard to feel; this is by design, as it allows them to enjoy their food (i.e., you) in peace.

While long-lived insects often evade DIY treatment, those with short lifespans pose their own challenges, often due to their rapid reproductive rates. Fruit flies, for example, might only live for 15 or so days, but the females lay hundreds of eggs in this time span. Mosquitoes peak around two weeks and lay hundreds of eggs through constant breeding in Rockleigh’s standing water. Houseflies live for about a week and a half under prime conditions, yet each female lays over 500 eggs in her short heyday, laying even more in places like open garbage cans. Fleas live for about three weeks before they take that giant leap into parasite paradise. During the female’s lifecycle, she can lay up to 50 eggs a day.
