 With its intense natural surroundings, Millburn is especially attractive to rodents, arachnids, and insects. They’re present year-round, with certain species more prominent depending on the season.

Daddy longlegs are a common household pest named for their lengthy appendages. Colloquially, the moniker is used to describe two different types of insects: Harvestman and the Cellar Spider. Harvestmen are not true spiders, but a different type of arachnid that fancies strolls across living room walls, on plants, and on ceilings. Unlike cellar spiders (true spiders), harvestmen have only one pair of eyes and oval bodies rather than a segmented appearance. Aside from checking their IDs, you can tell them apart by looking for a web; harvestmen don’t spin one, while cellar spiders do. 

Rats are prominent chewers with teeth strong enough to occasionally chew through concrete. Because their incisors are ever-growing, they chew on anything that’ll keep their pearly whites trim. This makes them a triple threat for homeowners: they gnaw through cables and cords, spread disease, and contaminate surfaces with garbage, feces, and bacteria. They also deter houseguests, which may or may not be a bad thing, depending on whether or not you’re an introvert. 

Cockroaches are especially problematic for asthmatics; up to 80% of people with asthma are sensitive to cockroach saliva, feces, and shed skin. Even for those without allergies, roaches muck up surfaces with all kinds of icky, sticky things. A strength-in-numbers species, they’re difficult to get rid of once they infest; they’re excellent hiders, survivors, and breeders. A single cockroach couple visiting your pantry on their honeymoon might quickly spiral into a full-blown infestation. 

Pill bugs a.k.a. rolly pollies are an interesting species with a bar-trivia-worthy fun fact: they’re not insects but rather land-dwelling crustaceans. They count crabs and shrimp among their cousins and breathe through modified gills. They have a love-hate relationship with water: they can drown despite their gill-like organs, but they also require moisture to survive. They’re more likely to invade your Millburn garden than your garage; in large numbers, they devastate plants, completely skeletonizing seedlings.
