Outdoor Nuisances, Flourishing Roaches, and Insatiable Insects

Livingston is home to all sorts of Garden State species. They enter homes and buildings via gaps, cracks, open doorways, pipes, and vents. Some don’t even need to access your property to do their damage.

Spotted lanternflies were first noted in New Jersey in 2018, and they wasted no time leaving their mark on orchards, gardens, and groves. While it’s unusual to find infestations inside a home or building, they’re highly problematic in yards and on ranches. They excrete a sugary honeydew that promotes mold growth, threatening everything from your award-winning roses to your farm crops. 

Cockroaches flourish in difficult circumstances: they know how to evade danger, eat nearly anything (from crumbs to glue to hair), live for long periods without food or shelter, and play a mean game of hide-and-go-seek. Like many prolific pests, they reproduce as if they’re repopulating the earth, discarding their birth control measures in favor of insect domination. 

Termites are extraordinarily destructive pests due to their wood-eating ways; feasting on cellulose, they dig in around the clock, turning your subfloors and door frames into a Vegas buffet. Although they’re commonly found in attics or rafters, they can also be contained in wooden furniture or tree trunks. The termite queens are long-lived, celebrating their 40th birthdays and beyond. This is because they’re insulated from danger and disease, evolutionarily geared toward survival, and possess exemplary antioxidant defenses and DNA repair mechanisms.

Mice and rats frequently evade the rodent roundup because of their athleticism, adaptability, and survival instincts. Rats, in particular, fear new things, which keeps them away from traps and poison. Even when these clever crawlers are successfully removed from Livingston properties through DIY measures, it’s hard to get rid of them all: female mice and rats produce nearly 100 pups a year. Both species show accelerated sexual maturation; babies having babies, they can get pregnant at roughly 4-6 weeks old.
