Leonia: Arts, Culture, and a Little Quirk
Leonia looms large on the eastern edge of Bergen County, expertly balancing its suburban streets with nature’s beauty. Vistas of greenery, major roadways, and nearby New York City merge to form a unique urban-meets-rural oasis. Originally developed as a commuter town, serving Wall Street wanderers shuttling back and forth to Manhattan, it came into its own in the early 20th century, attracting intellectuals and artists from various walks of life. An artistic atmosphere is still evident today.
In fact, its creative identity is a major draw to both long-time residents and newcomers seeking flair, fun, and a bit of an out-of-the-box community. Regional theater, local events, and civic engagement make up the fabric of the frontier, offering spirited, subtly quirky, and distinct character. While not a huge commercial juggernaut, Broad Avenue offers modest options, including eateries, shops, and boutiques stocked full of everyday essentials.

Infestations of Grand Proportions
Pests might not be the most intellectual creatures, but they flock to Leonia just the same. From rodents to roaches, infestations are common.
Ants are among the prevalent pests in New Jersey and come in a variety of species, including carpenter ants and fire ants. One of the largest ant infestations on record is thankfully far from the Garden State; it’s located in a supercolony along the Mediterranean. It’s estimated to contain over a trillion ants and is notable for the ants’ ability to get along, making it one of the most robust, cooperative animal societies on Earth.
Wasps are another frequently encountered infestation. One of the largest wasp nests ever was in Alabama; it measured around 12 feet tall and six feet wide and contained roughly 18,000 yellowjackets. It was found inside a wall and organized into multiple comb structures like an insect skyscraper.
Spiders are also common in Leonia, though infestations tend to be smaller than in other countries. In Australia, for example, towns have experienced “spider rain” where spiders appear to fall from the sky. This happens when baby spiders or small spiders climb to high points and release silk threads into the air, lifting them into the sky like balloons. They can travel for miles, eventually landing on cars, buildings, fields, and (probably) people’s hair.
Back in the US, spiders don’t rain down, but locusts have in the past. The Rocky Mountain Locust swarm was an extraordinary plague that occurred in 1875 across the Great Plains and is among the largest swarms (and biggest natural disasters) ever documented. It covered 198,000 square miles (about 23 times the size of New Jersey), involved 3.5 trillion insects, and destroyed crops, wood, clothing, leather, and more. The swarm was so dense that it took on an apocalyptic aura, blocking out sunlight, cooling the earth, and causing economic collapse and starvation in certain areas. While farmers tried everything to fight back, their efforts were futile until the early 1900s, when the species died off seemingly out of the blue.
