Boxelder bugs are a common infestation found in homes and buildings. They overwinter in walls, attics, and rafters, emerging when the spring weather warms (making infestations more visible in April and May). Although they’re not parasitic or disease spreaders, they have other bad habits, including staining surfaces and emitting odors when disturbed. 

Stink bugs are also funky fiends, releasing offensive fumes when handled, disturbed, trapped, stressed, or crushed. This smell can range from subtle to more potent and is often described as cilantro-like, skunky or musty, slightly chemical, bitter, and akin to rotting vegetables.

Ants release pheromones to direct their little ant friends to food sources. This is why ants quickly appear whenever someone spills vanilla yogurt on the front stoop, arriving at the scene of the slime in record time. Ants are nifty navigators and rely on the sun and landmarks to get from point A to B and back again; they can remember visual cues such as plants, sidewalks, walls, and rocks. Some ants, such as desert ants found in, unsurprisingly, desert regions, are famous for their ability to wander far from home and use their GPS gifts to return to their nests.

Ladybugs are a type of beetle. While a single one is a sign of good fortune in many cultures, infestations aren’t so lucky. Like boxelder bugs, ladybugs overwinter inside homes and come out of hiding when days lengthen, temperatures rise, and humidity increases. Although often red with black dots, they come in various colors, including orange, yellow, black, and brown. Little-known ladybug fact: Their larvae look like tiny alligators . . . nothing like the adults!
