Clifton’s International Flair and Nimble Nature

Clifton is one of New Jersey’s largest municipalities, boasting a population of 90,000 residents. On the southern side of Passaic County, it offers a mix of everything: urban sprawl, suburban expanses, and quiet neighborhoods. Like nearby New York City, the area is a melting pot, home to a diverse population of people from all over the world. Italian, Polish, South Asian, and Middle Eastern cultures are especially influential, as evidenced by specialty markets, festivals, churches, cultural celebrations, and the town’s dynamic and delicious international food scene.

The Passaic River borders the area’s eastern boundary, offering riverside adventure for water-bound explorers and nature seekers. With proximity to major highways and a strong local transit system, the town is popular among commuters, although longtime residents, families, and New Jersey newbies (especially those with hardworking, middle-class roots) are equally prominent. The city is highly regarded for its recreation system; it’s home to open space, rec centers, and parks, including Garret Mountain Reservation, among the state’s most beloved outdoor offerings. It also has one of the richest histories in the region due to its ties to the silk industry.

Giant Spiders, Elusive Rodents, and Wood Tunnelers

All kinds of pests make themselves at home in Clifton, sometimes making themselves at home in your home, too!

Wolf spiders are sell-your-house size, as their presence might just compel arachnophobics to call their realtor. The Carolina Wolf Spider is the biggest documented species; it’s found across the US (including New Jersey) and has a leg span of up to four inches. Mothers carry their spiderlings on their backs for days, toting around hundreds of tiny spider babies as they tour your basement. While large (and in charge of causing arachnophobia), wolf spiders don’t have enough venom to harm humans. They can bite, but most avoid people and pets as best they can.

Rats are highly intelligent, which allows them to outsmart DIY pest control treatments. They have excellent memories, avoid new things, recall solutions to complex problems, and learn to navigate twisty and turny mazes. Although destructive in Clifton homes and buildings, rats are beneficial in other settings. Some have been trained to detect landmines in war-torn countries; others are used in the medical field to detect tuberculosis, a serious bacterial infection that most often attacks the lungs.

Carpenter ants are also difficult to treat on your own. They’re notorious for building satellite colonies, creating a Whack-a-Mole situation inside your walls; you can remove one nest, but another just pops right up. Some colonies contain thousands of worker ants, and their presence is more destructive than that of other ant species. They actively excavate wood, damaging it as termites do (however, unlike termites, carpenter ants don’t eat wood; they create tunnels and storage chambers inside it).

Fleas are Mother Nature’s long jump champions, able to leap 100 times their body length. This is equivalent to a dog jumping an entire city block or a cat leaping to the top of a 20-story building. It’s not quite as far as a cow jumping over the moon, but it is on par with a cow jumping over roughly 2,500 moon pies. Fleas enter homes on pets, fabrics, and occasionally people, but they don’t stay on their hosts for long; infestations are most often found in carpets, drapes, furniture, and pet beds.
