Belleville
Professional Pests Control

Belleville is a mid-size borough located near the Passaic River in Essex County. Among the oldest towns in New Jersey, it was heavily influenced by Dutch settlers and modern-day Latin Americans and Italians. Pests are just as diverse, showing up in homes and buildings in seasonal swarms.

Belleville’s Dynamic Diversity and Historic Grounds

Belleville is an Essex County town tucked along the Passaic River. Located near Newark, it’s considered part of the New York metropolitan area and a popular place for commuters, professionals, and executives. This doesn’t mean it adopts a big-city ethos; defined by its perfectly groomed parks, historic homes, cherry blossom trees, and lively residential streets, it oozes suburbia. Here, youth baseball fields are more popular than nightclubs, and school events (instead of Broadway plays) take center stage.

The town’s population (roughly 40,000 people) is highly diverse, with a strong Latin American, Italian, and Portuguese presence that influences dining, shopping, and entertainment culture. Historically, the borough is among the oldest in the Garden State, incorporated in 1839. However, it played a prominent role in the nation’s evolution long before that. The Reformed Dutch Church of Second River (listed on the National Register of Historic Places) was originally built in 1697. More than 60 Continental Army soldiers, those who battled against the British, are buried in the church’s adjacent cemetery.

Furry Fiends and Noisy Nuisances

Belleville booms with all sorts of pests. From winter wanderers to summer sneakers, they enter homes and buildings all year long.

Mice are among the most common household pests in New Jersey and across the country. Signs of an infestation include musty odors (from their urine trails), visible droppings, and chewed wires and cords. Mice can often be heard as well, scratching walls or rustling through clutter. They’re hard to get rid of with DIY methods, largely because of their reproductive capacity. A female mouse is only pregnant for about 19-21 days (making human females jealous) and can get pregnant again 24 hours after giving birth (maybe not so jealous now).

Caterpillars are known for turning into beautiful butterflies, but some draw the short end of the Lepidoptera stick and become subtly-marked moths instead. Some species are extraordinarily muscular, with more muscle for their size than humans despite lacking gym memberships. They’re not always docile plant eaters, either; some caterpillars are carnivores and eat aphids and insect larvae.

Crickets are often heard before they’re seen. Although Belleville cricket invasions aren’t common, they’re not unprecedented, either; some crickets have engaged in locust-like swarms, destroying crops and stripping fields bare. Crickets have also gathered on roadways and been run over, causing sludge to ooze from their bodies, stick to the surface, and create conditions similar to driving on ice.

Earwigs were once believed to crawl into human ears, but that’s an old wives’ tale. They tend to avoid people, yet they occasionally invade moisture-prone rooms such as basements, mudrooms, and bathrooms. They aren’t venomous, but they use their pincers to defend themselves (even if it’s defending themselves from your foot on a shower floor). This pinch is felt, although not especially painful.

Cockroaches don’t pinch, but they can bite. Because they’re elusive creatures, they’re more likely to run away from you than take a chunk out of you. New Jersey infestations are most dangerous due to roaches’ allergy-triggering habits, propensity to contaminate surfaces, and ability to breed. Of course, they’re infamous for their survival skills; they’ve existed for hundreds of millions of years, predating the dinosaurs.
