Arachnophobes say the “legginess” and “sudden movement of spiders is what scares them the most. Their creepy-crawly looks may freak us out because our brains can’t reasonably predict their quick erratic movements. Unfortunately, some of the scariest spiders live right here in New Jersey.
New Jersey Scary Spiders
Let’s take a peek into five scary spiders in New Jersey.
#1 Wolf Spider
As one of the largest spiders in the area, the wolf spider can reach two inches in length. It has very long, hairy legs and sharp fangs to its intimidation factor. Although the wolf spider isn’t agressive, it will undoubtedly send people running in the other direction!
Though mainly harmless to humans, wolf spiders are feared because of their fierce namesake and size. These hairy arachnids can grow up to 35 mm in body length, having fuzzy black, gray, and brown hues.
Quick to move, these scary spiders often provoke fear when found in human dwellings. But, fear not. Wolf spiders would rather run and hide than bite. However, if you see a wolf spider, it’s best to call the experts.
#2 Black Widow
There are two different black widow spiders in New Jersey, the southern L. machines and the northern black L. various. Both have like appearances but differ in the shape of their hourglass marking.
These scary spiders tend to hide in quiet out-of-site spaces, like dark corners, closets, sheds, and basements.
From Black Widow the movie to Iggy Azalea’s Black Widow music video, these horrific creatures catch a bad rap (and with good reason).
If you come face-to-face with a Black Widow (and it’s not Natasha Romanoff), promise us you’ll back away very slowly and give us a call immediately.
It’s dangerous! The venom of this scary spider contains a potent neurotoxin, which can cause their victim extreme nerve pain. You will not feel good if bitten.
#3 Yellow Spider
Tiny yet powerful yellow spiders pack a powerful punch when taking a nibble of their victim. Though they are not poisonous, the Yellow Sac Spider is venomous. Not only is a Yellow Sac Spider’s bite excruciating, but it also causes intense swelling and itching of the skin.
Their venom is unlikely to cause any lasting damage and is very mild. However, it’s still a good idea to reach out to your doctor if an aggressive Yellow Sac Spider spider bites you.
Unfortunately, these scary spiders do not love cold, so they invite themselves inside the home during the winter months. These albino creeps enjoy crawling on ceilings and walls. You might even find them in your laundry, but they’re indeed not folding your pile of clothes.
#4 Brown Recluse
With a violin-shaped mark on their abdomen, the Brown Recluse can be very dangerous! These venomous spiders spread to about the size of a quarter. Though rarely seen, the Brown Recluse exists in New Jersey.
As treacherous as they look, some horrifying symptoms of a brown recluse spider bite include bloody urine, extreme fatigue, and excruciating joint pain. In addition, they can inject venom that causes itching at the bite site, causing pain, and the tissue around the bite can ulcerate and die. Even so, the tissue damage can take upwards of a year to heal. So if you think you’ve been bitten by a brown recluse, seek immediate attention from your health care provider.
The good news is when it comes to these brown buggers, they are not aggressive and generally only feel inclined to bite when feeling threatened. So, don’t poke with a stick.
#5 Jumping Spiders
You might find Jumping Spiders warming up to catch their prey; they’re pure athletes. They can leap great distances in a single bound. Upon spotting dinner, a jumping spider will quickly leap into action. In fact, they can skip anywhere from 6 to 50 times their body length. They’re so good at catching prey; they don’t even need to spin a web.
As genuinely curious creatures, jumping spiders are known (by the spider-loving community) to be friendly. However, known for their beady eyes, most people claim otherwise. When approached by a human, they’re known to make eye contact and slowly back away. We don’t know what else will if that doesn’t give you the heebeegeebees.
What if you come in contact with a venomous spider?
Most spider bights are harmless. However, if you were bitten by a dangerous spider, like the Brown Recluse or Black Widow, seek medical attention immediately. Common symptoms include abdominal cramping, growing wound at the bit site, or severe pain.
